Problem
The Tandem team noticed that in this digital age, many athletic coaches were overlooking the opportunity to earn an additional income by expanding their business online. Together, we aimed to create an accessible hub to revolutionize the online coaching industry.
Solution
We designed and developed Tandem - a digital coaching platform that consists of two apps:
TANDEM, EXPERT EXPERIENCE
Where coaches can provide in-depth video analyses for students and expand their clientele.

RESEARCH
Defining the Problem
We conducted market and user research to explore the potential benefits of a digital coaching platform. Our research methods included user interviews, journey maps, and job stories.
Interviewing coaches & athletes
We reached out to Bruce and Kaitlin, a golf coach and student, respectively, to learn how they continue their golf discussions off the range. They shared text message examples of how they would communicate, and their frustrations with this method.

Mapping out the coach-to-student feedback loop
We identified additional pain paints and feelings, notably such as time to send feedback, time to download feedback, frustrations in finding media.
Contextualizing user needs
Sketching, wireframing, and ireframes and moving higher into fidelity per every user test. At this stage of the MVP, we focused only on building the main features that would enable easy remote communication between coaches and students, including a messaging hub, video analyses tool, and media management.

By communicating early designs with engineers, we were able to identify technical constraints, resulting in the creation of two apps: a coach's app, and a student's app.
These MVPs, focused only on enabling remote communication between the two apps, which includes: a messaging hub, video analysis tool, and media management.
PROTOTYPE
An athlete to coach feedback loop
VIDEO ANALYSIS TOOL
The video analysis tool enables coaches to provide in-depth feedback of a student's performance. Students can see their coach mark up the video, slow down or speed up the playback speed, and switch video perspectives. The top left face cam area shows the coach's real-time reaction, fostering an interpersonal connection between the two.

Reaching more clients
SHARABLE ASSETS
Sharable assets act as a digital business card. They allow coaches to promote themselves on their social media, website, and as an attachment.
GAMIFYING THE FEATURE
We strategically designed this feature in a way that motivates users to complete their profile. As each section of the profile is complete, coaches would be rewarded with a new type of sharable asset.

Results
With just an MVP, Tandem resolved the skepticism that coaches and students had about moving to a digital space. We tested our product with over 15 coaches and 30 students across 5 sports, iterating the product's design until users were satisfied with its core functions. This resulted in a product that significantly reduces coach to student communication time and video analyses from hours into minutes.
